SolarWinds- Network Performance Monitor
SOLARWINDS WI-FI MONITORING NETWORK PERFORMANCE MONITOR
FEATURES
Wi-Fi Device & Signal Monitoring
NPM not only monitors wired infrastructure but also tracks wireless devices (access points, wireless controllers, stations) by IP address, SSID, channel, signal strength, and associated client count.
Wireless Heat Map Visualization
Using Network Atlas or Orion maps, you can generate heat maps over floor plans to visualize wireless signal coverage. Supports “walking” and “sitting” sample modes to pinpoint weak spots.
Multi-Vendor Wireless Support
NPM supports wireless network gear from Cisco, Meraki, Aruba, Juniper, Ruckus, Extreme, and others—allowing integration of wireless monitoring in multi-vendor environments.
Alerts & Thresholds on Wireless Metrics
You can set thresholds and alerts for wireless conditions (e.g. weak signal, channel overlap) just like on a switch or router, allowing proactive issue detection.
Unified Monitoring Dashboard
Wireless and wired metrics appear together in dashboards and topology views, enabling correlation of wireless issues with wired infrastructure performance.
SPECIFICATIONS
Supported protocols: SNMP (v1/v2/v3), WMI, ICMP, API/REST where applicable.
Device/element scaling: Designed to support large networks (example: up to “one million elements” under proper licensing) per datasheet.
Wireless monitoring: Updates WiFi maps every ~5 minutes for wireless device performance and coverage.
Deployment: On-premises or hybrid, web based console; works with Microsoft SQL backend for large data retention.
Dashboards & visualization: Customisable dashboards, drag-drop widgets, topology maps and path views.
Alert delivery methods: Supports email, SMS, SNMP traps, external program launch & custom actions.
Reporting: Historical and real-time data; scheduled reports in PDF/CSV; capacity forecasting.
Wireless device monitoring capability: Includes wireless client monitoring, access point stats integrated into NPM.
License model: Sensor/element-based licensing (number of nodes/interfaces/volumes) with tiers.
SOLARWINDS WI-FI MONITORING TRAFFIC
FEATURES
Analyze Traffic Patterns on Wi-Fi Routers & Controllers
SolarWinds NTA (NetFlow Traffic Analyzer) lets you monitor traffic through Wi-Fi routers or wireless LAN controllers. You can see which endpoints or applications are consuming the most bandwidth on your wireless segments.
Identify Top Talkers & Applications
You can drill down to see which devices, IPs, and application protocols are using the most Wi-Fi bandwidth. Helps spot bottlenecks or “hogging” traffic.
Full Wi-Fi Infrastructure Visibility
Includes wireless access points, controllers, and client devices in the monitoring scope—letting you manage them alongside wired devices.
Customizable Dashboards & Reports
Provides a Wi-Fi traffic dashboard with top-10 views and other widgets; supports historical reporting, trend analysis, and alerts.
Traffic Drill-Down & Filtering
Allows filtering by source/destination IP, application, protocol, and grouping of IP ranges to focus on specific Wi-Fi traffic segments.
Alerts & Thresholds
You can define thresholds to trigger alerts when Wi-Fi interface usage exceeds set limits, or when particular devices or apps cross usage thresholds.
SPECIFICATIONS
Monitored Protocols: NetFlow, IPFIX, J-Flow, sFlow (for Wi-Fi traffic via router/ACL exports)
Visualization: Wi-Fi traffic dashboard, top talkers lists, usage graphs, historical charts
Device Types Covered: Wireless access points, wireless LAN controllers, connected clients
Interface Mapping: Ability to map flow interface IDs to SNMP interface IDs for better correlation
Heat Maps / Coverage Views: NPM includes heat map visualizations based on AP/SSID/client data and updates regularly (every ~5 minutes)
Polling & Refresh Rate: Topology, device discovery, and performance polling refresh intervals built into the system (default ~5 minutes for some wireless metrics)
Historical Data Retention & Reporting: Retains usage data for trend analysis, capacity planning, and detailed reporting over time.
